Epitalon: A Four-Residue Peptide and the Telomere Question
Four amino acids and a very large set of claims. Epitalon is a case study in reading a literature critically rather than counting citations.

Epitalon is the shortest compound in this series — a tetrapeptide, four residues, alanine-glutamate-aspartate-glycine. It is also the one where the distance between the published evidence and the marketing language is widest, so it deserves a careful read.
Where it came from
The compound emerged from Russian research into pineal gland extracts conducted from the 1980s onward. Researchers isolated a peptide preparation from the gland and later produced a synthetic four-residue sequence intended to reproduce its activity. Epitalon is that synthetic sequence.
The pineal gland regulates circadian rhythm through melatonin, and the original hypothesis connected age-related changes in that gland to broader ageing processes. That framing is why almost every Epitalon paper sits in the gerontology literature.
The telomerase claim, examined
Telomeres are repetitive sequences capping chromosome ends; they shorten with each division until a cell stops dividing. Telomerase is the enzyme that can extend them, and it is largely inactive in most adult somatic cells.
Published studies, principally from the original research groups, report increased telomerase activity and telomere elongation in human somatic cell cultures treated with the peptide. Those are real published results. The honest caveat is that the literature is heavily concentrated among a small number of related groups, much of it published in a narrow set of journals, and independent replication outside that circle is thin.

Epitalon is a research compound with no marketing authorisation in Europe. It is not an anti-ageing treatment, and no such claim is made here.
How to read a thin literature
The useful habit is not to count papers but to count independent groups. Twenty papers from three affiliated laboratories is a weaker evidence base than four papers from four unrelated ones. Check the author lists and the funding statements — it takes a minute and changes how much weight a result deserves.
Handling
A four-residue peptide is chemically about as simple as this field gets, and it reconstitutes easily. Standard practice applies: cold, dark, dry storage for the lyophilised powder; gentle reconstitution with bacteriostatic water; refrigerated and dated working solutions; no repeated freeze-thaw.
Because the sequence is so short, the certificate of analysis should be close to textbook — a single dominant peak and a clean mass match. There is very little excuse for a messy chromatogram on a tetrapeptide.
